Somewhere along the way, starting solids has become… intense.

There are apps, schedules, meal plans, rules, opinions from family, advice from friends, and suddenly it feels like you need to get everything right from day one.

Some say start at 4 months, some say wait till 6 months. What do you do?

👶 How do you know if your baby is ready?

Before anything else, it helps to look for a few readiness cues, not just the timeline.

Most babies are ready around 6 months, but instead of focusing on age alone, look for things like:

  • Sitting with minimal support

  • Good head and neck control

  • Showing interest in food (watching you eat, reaching out)

  • Bringing things to their mouth

  • Opening their mouth when food comes near

These small signs tell you that your baby is ready to explore food, not necessarily eat full meals yet.

👨‍👩‍👦 Eat together, it makes a bigger difference than you think

One thing that helped us more than anything: We just ate together.

No distractions. No screens. Just us, sitting and eating.

Babies learn so much just by watching you.

  • They watch how you pick up food

  • How you chew

  • How you swallow

And yes, sometimes you’ll feel a little silly doing this 😄 But it actually helps to exaggerate chewing and eat slowly in front of them.

You’re not just feeding them, you’re showing them how to eat.

🧡 Start where you are comfortable

This part matters just as much as your baby’s readiness.

If you need a few more weeks, take them.
If you want to go slow, go slow.
If you want to keep it super simple, do that.

There is no prize for starting early or doing more.

🥄 What “starting solids” actually looks like

In the beginning, your baby is not really “eating” in the way we imagine.

They might:

  • Taste a little

  • Take 1–2 spoons

  • Play with the food or smush it

  • Drop most of it

And that’s completely normal. Because at this stage, you’re not feeding them for nutrition.

You’re introducing new textures, new tastes and a whole new experience. Think of it as exposure, not intake.

I was a huge ball of anxiety about solids. Doctor gave us headsup to start at 4th month, but baby was not ready. More importantly, I was not ready. I did not want to pass my fears and anxiety to my little one. So, I did research, I bought few things and started SLOW.

For us, starting solids was… being very simple. No elaborate plan. No perfect meals.

Sometimes it was just, a banana to hold and nibble or a soft piece of steamed vegetable like brocolli

Our little one took a few curious bites, And a lot of mess. BUT that was enough.

His nutrition was still coming from breastmilk and formula, yes we did combo feeding!
