Starting Solids Is a Milestone for Moms Too
Here’s How to Begin Without Overwhelm
When people talk about starting solids, it’s always about the baby.
“What will they eat?”
“How much should they eat?”
“Are they ready?”
But no one really talks about how big of a moment this is for you, the mother!
Because if you’re a first-time mom, this doesn’t just feel like introducing food. It feels like stepping into a whole new phase of parenting.
It can feel quite overwhelming.
🤍 It is a milestone, for you too
I remember thinking the exact same thing: This feels like such a big moment.
And it is.
You’ve spent months learning how to feed your baby, learning their cues, building your rhythm, and now suddenly, everything is about to change.
There’s excitement. There’s curiosity. And there’s also a quiet pressure in the background:
👉 Am I doing this right?
👉 Am I starting too early? Too late?
👉 What if I mess this up?
👉 What if the baby chokes?
If that’s where you are right now, you’re not alone.
Before anything else, it helps to look for a few readiness cues, not just the timeline. Check out my blog on Starting Solids for Babies.
Remember, not just the baby but you feeling somewhat ready matters too.
😵💫 The pressure is real (and unnecessary)
This is the one thing I find myself repeating to almost every mom: Don’t try to do everything all at once.
You don’t need 10 different foods, or a perfect feeding schedule, fancy recipes, or full meals.
You can start with:
One food {a banana 🍌}
One meal a day {breakfast or lunch}
A few spoons (or even just exploration)
That’s it.
Remember, at the beginning you’re introducing:
New textures
New tastes
A whole new experience
Think of it as exposure, not intake.
🧘♀️ Take the pressure off
One thing I hear a lot is: “I don’t feel confident starting solids yet.”
I felt that too. But here’s what I’ve learned: Confidence doesn’t come before you start. It comes after.
You build it slowly. With each meal. With each tiny step.
You don’t wake up one day feeling 100% ready, you become ready by doing.
If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s this:
This is a long journey. You don’t have to get everything right on day one.
You’re learning. Your baby is learning. You’re figuring this out together.
So start small. Go slow. And let this be a positive, low-pressure experience, for both of you.
Starting solids isn’t just about feeding your baby. It’s about, letting go a little, trusting the process and growing into a new version of yourself as a parent
And you’re allowed to take your time getting there.
